We had to do our earliest Dining with Dad this week due to Alex’s work schedule. I know that as the kids get older and have more things to do, continuing DWD is going to become tougher and tougher to schedule. But we’ll continue to try to get it in, even if that means we do it on a Monday. So this week we headed downtown to The Old Mohawk. We parked a block away and walked and went by the best decorated Halloween house I think I’ve ever seen. You just never know what you might see in German village.

After checking out the cool Halloween house we headed on to The Old Mohawk. I’ve had this on the radar since March! Around St. Patrick’s day I was googling for places that have reubens and this place popped up. I knew there was enough on the menu that the kids would like and was very curious to see if Alex would go daring and get one of their specialties.

One of their specialties, per their menu, is turtle soup. Alex is my more adventurous eater so I made sure to point it out to him. Chloe of course objected to the idea. The thought of little turtles being cooked for soup blew her mind. But as Alex mentioned, not ordering it isn’t going to save any turtles as they are already in the kitchen cooked up in the soup. Alex’s only hesitation was if he didn’t like it so he settled on a cup instead of a bowl. I’d never had it before either and it was very tasty. It’s a tomato base soup and the spice reminded me of chilli. Chloe was even going to try it but it had many many peas in it so she couldn’t have any.

Chloe couldn’t have Alex’s soup because of her allergy and she and I ordered an appetizer that Alex was allergic to. Chloe mentioned that fact at the dinner table as she’s always paying attention to little details. In pointing out the appetizers to Chloe on the menu, I asked her if she wanted to try the Crab Tater Tots. Clearly I wanted to try them so as long as Chloe was in, we were going to get them. She was in for the Crab Tater Tots so thats what we did. They were delicious! I wish there was a little more crab in them but they were enjoyable and I’d get them again.

Alex knew what he wanted for his entree before he picked the soup. He gravitated to the Reuben right away. It’s not what I thought he would get but I was glad that he did. I had a feeling that he would give me a bite and sure enough he did. It was delicious! He replaced the chips with fries which apparently were just average as he didn’t want to take them home with the half of Reuben he didn’t eat.

Chloe was having a very tough time deciding. She had it narrowed down between the Smoked Chicken Ravioli and the Homemade Meatloaf. I had mentioned to her that my original place for DWD this week was an Italian place and she asked if we could do something else since she just had spaghetti for the last one when we went to the French restaurant. She wanted the ravioli but mentioned again the fact that she had just had Italian food for the last DWD. After going back and forth, I told her that I would get the meatloaf and she could get the ravioli, that way if she wanted both we could just split. So that’s what we did! She loved the potato pancakes from Hofbräuhaus and saw them on the menu so she added a side of those. I added a side of mashed potatoes to the meatloaf because how good is meatloaf without mashed potatoes??

Since we were only a block away from the shoppes at Schmidts, and Schmidts itself, we walked on down there. After taking the mandatory photos with the faceless Germans at Schmidts, we walked through a couple shoppes. It was a great little bonus to the evening and the kids loved it.
