The Eagle Food & Beer Hall
Megan was asking me if I had decided on this week’s Dining with Dad yet and I hadn’t. She mentioned The Eagle which I had actually heard of but hadn’t tried yet. When I was in Charlotte last year visiting my buddy AJ, we almost went there for dinner. There’s only 6 of them in the U.S. so it’s nice that they are in Charlotte and Columbus. I was really looking forward to this one.
I’m not a fan of going downtown on a Friday night, but if you want good fried chicken, you have to make some sacrifices. Of course the traffic was bad so we were a little late for our reservation time but we were there early enough that it didn’t matter. The restaurant is a two story restaurant so we were seated upstairs.
We were waited on fairly quickly. Even though it was fast, Alex was able to spot an appetizer that he wanted very quickly. So after we put in our drink orders, he ordered the Brown Sugar Bacon. I got a water with my beer, which was good because Chloe needed it for the bacon. The cayenne pepper had just enough kick to it that her Sprite wasn’t cooling her down. The sweetness of the brown sugar with the cayenne pepper was very tasty.
Obviously the main item on the menu is the fried chicken. They do have a couple other options on the menu in case you aren’t in the mood for chicken. And by a couple, yeah, it’s pretty much just two that aren’t chicken. But we were all in on getting chicken. We are more into the white chicken so we all went with 1/4 chicken, all white meat. That equates to two pieces of chicken. So all we had to really do was decide on the side dishes we wanted. The kids both got fries and Alex also got some cole slaw. I went for the spoon bread. All three were very good. The aioli that came with the fries was surprisingly very good to dip the fries in. The spoon bread was good but I didn’t taste much maple in the maple butter. I ended up putting some of the spicy honey on it which was very yummy!
Tonight we had a bit of a bonus. Alex had heard about The Yard Milkshake Bar from one of his friends at school. He had texted me a couple weeks ago about it and asked if we could go sometime for Dining with Dad. When I was looking at the map to see where to park for The Eagle, I saw that The Yard was just down the street.
The walk was good for me as I ate a little too much at dinner. I couldn’t wait to see Alex’s face when he saw the sign for it. He had no idea where we were going, just that it was for dessert. His face lit up when he finally saw it! We walked in and started looking at the menu. Alex quickly decided on one of the October specials ones, Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice. Chloe wasn’t feeling a specialty one so she went for just a plain Chocolate milkshake with whipped cream. I was too full from dinner so I passed and just shared some of theirs. They were both very good. Just like all the over the top milkshakes, there’s just a bit too much sugar to really enjoy an entire one by yourself but they were very good and I’d definitely share one with someone again!
