This week’s Dining with Dad location was chosen late in the week after a discussion with Chloe. I had a nice Italian restaurant picked out originally. I was driving Chloe to her school for a special presentation where she was awarded a certificate for being such a good student and role model for her peers. While driving, we heard something on the radio that reminded us of Fish and Chips. As we discussed how she hadn’t had this for quite some time, I let her decide on keeping this week’s location, the Italian restaurant I selected, or go somewhere that has great Fish and chips; hence we went to Old Bag of Nails this week.

We were all hungry so we headed down around 5pm. We were seated at the front of the restaurant right near the window. Given that we were there so early, we checked out the Happy Hour specials and they had a discount on appetizers. After looking at the options on the menu, we decided on the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel. Obviously Chloe didn’t partake in the cheese dip, but neither did Alex which was a bit surprising. I did have it though, and it was fantastic.

I’ll start with the most obvious entree choice, which was Chloe’s. She did in fact go with the Fish and Chips which they have on the kids menu for a smaller portion (and smaller price!). She said it was much better than what she had when we went to Flanagan’s. We were talking about the fake newspaper lining and how over in England they would use newspapers to serve fish and chips at local pubs. Chloe asked if the USA stole this and I said yeah, I guess they did. She said, “yeah we steal everything and then give people credit in really tiny print that no one can see.”

Alex took a kids menu as well to see if there was something he wanted from it. He was looking at the cheeseburger but had that for lunch at school so he wanted to see if there was something on the adult menu. He wanted to try the Philly Cheese Steak with no mushrooms or peppers. He was all set to order the cheeseburger until the server showed up and he pulled the ole switch-a-roo and ordered the cheesesteak. He was very happy with his choice and he ate most of it, which is rare for him to finish his meal.

Lastly, it was my turn to decide what I wanted. They have many options on the menu that I considered. I was very close to going for some fish, but figured if Chloe didn’t eat all hers, I could have that fish. Unfortunately that backfired and she ate every single bite of it! I had been to Old Bag of Nails before, but at their Gahanna location, which unfortunately is now closed. I had their Reuben last time and it was so good, I went with it again. How can you go wrong with corned beef and sauerkraut?

When we were discussing Dining with Dad early this week, I told the kids that the place we were going to had bread pudding, which as avid followers know, is one of my favorite desserts. When Chloe was thinking of deciding to change this weeks’ location, she mentioned she didn’t want to change it because then I wouldn’t get my bread pudding. She’s always so thoughtful of others. Luck would have it that Old Bag of Nails also has bread pudding as one of their desserts. Obviously, i had to order it.

They were out of the bourbon sauce that goes on top so they gave me the option of replacing it with ice cream or whipped cream. I knew Chloe wanted the ice cream so I went with that. I was quite disappointed with the bread pudding itself. It was just very ordinary and probably some type of pre-made dessert. If we return, I would pass on this one next time. The saving grace was the ice cream. Hopefully the next bread pudding will be better.
