I had a few different places picked out for this week’s Dining with Dad. Then this afternoon I saw an ad for G&R Tavern, which I already knew existed, but had never been there before. Chloe wanted me to strip down Hank (my Jeep Wrangler) so earlier I had taken the top down and the doors off. The weather was fantastic today so I asked the kids if they wanted to change the destination (which they didn’t know what it was other than it was an Italian cuisine) to a place that was in a small town about an hour away that we could just enjoy a cruise to. They were on board so we headed to Waldo, Ohio and G&R Tavern.

We took the “country” route to get to G&R which was very nice. We didn’t have to take a single highway and just kept driving through cornfields and small towns. Tonight was a great example of the old adage, “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey”. It was such a great trip with Alex and Chloe.

We arrived and the kids instantly saw on the side of the building about the famous bologna sandwich. We got out of the Jeep and took the obligatory picture and then walked up to the front door. The kids were laughing about the sign on the door and made sure to tell me to take my cleats off. Clearly cleats are a popular item in Waldo, Ohio.

We were able to seat ourselves anywhere we wanted. There were a few tables open when we got there so we had some options. As we were eating, people were coming in and having to be told to wait outside until a table opened up for them. I had no idea this place was that popular for such a small town. We were waited on right away and ordered our drinks as we looked over the menu.

Alex knew what he wanted fairly quickly. He was excited to try the famous bologna sandwich. He asked me what to get on it and I told him what I would get. He ended up getting it with cheese, pickle, mayo, and lettuce. He added some mustard after it arrived. He also ordered a side of ‘Munchers’. I told him that the online menu said that they were Jalapeño Poppers but the menu also had those as a separate item. He asked our server what the difference was and he told Alex that the Munchers were more like a potato, cheese, and jalapeño mix. Alex was very happy with his choice. He loved both the bologna and the munchers.

I knew as soon as I picked G&R what I was going to get. I, like Alex, went with the fried bologna sandwich. I went with cheese, onion, lettuce, and pickle on mine and added mustard as well. Since Alex got the munchers, I went with the Jalapeño poppers and figured we could try them both. We also grabbed a side of curly fries for all of us to split. The bologna was as good as advertised. The poppers were good too, but not the best I’ve had. But they probably are the cheapest.

Chloe had a tougher time figuring out what she was going to get. She didn’t want chicken tenders since she just had that yesterday at Signatures, her Thursday regular meal. I think she was a little nervous to go for the bologna so I told her to get something else and then she could try mine. She did try mine and she liked it, but probably wouldn’t order it. I saw that they had pork tenderloin, which I had a feeling she would like. She wasn’t sure what that was so I found some google photos of it and she decided to give it a try. She added lettuce and pickle to it and got some BBQ sauce on the side that she could add. She went with a side of onion rings to round out her meal. It was a good suggestion as she loved the pork tenderloin! She also liked the onion rings but did mention she likes them better when they are smaller onions. These ones were HUGE!

As we were finishing up eating we were kind of taking in the whole place. We were looking around and Alex pointed out a sign behind the bar that I just had to grab.a picture of. I think there’s many towns (or families) that can relate to this one.
