The Whitney House
At the start of the week, I wasn’t sure if we were going to make it to Dining with Dad this week with the weather we were expecting. It took about three hours of shoveling the driveway, but we were able to keep our traditional Friday night Dining with Dad. This week we headed up to Worthington to The Whitney House.
We headed out early, around 4:30pm as we weren’t sure how the roads were going to be. Luckily they were cleared very well and it didn’t take us much time at all to get there. We arrived around 5pm and so the restaurant was still pretty empty. We were able to sit right in front of the window which was such a great location. We were waiting on very quickly as we browsed the menu, looking for just the perfect meals.
Chloe went with the kids menu this time. She was looking at two different options, with the decision resting on how one was cooked. She was interested in the shrimp meal, but only if it was fried shrimp. Unfortunately, it was a pan seared shrimp so she had to go to her second choice, the pasta with red sauce. Even though it wasn’t the first choice, she said it was really good.
Alex decided to order off the adult menu after not finding anything on the kids menu he liked. At 15, he probably shouldn’t eat off the kids menu anymore but he eats so little most of the time, the serving size is perfect for him. I thought he would keep his enthusiasm for trying something new and unique, but he went back to a tried and true dish and got the Ohio Burger. He said the burger would be perfect if only it had bacon on it. When the server took his order, he asked Alex if he wanted anything additional on the burger, “like bacon”. Alex’s eyes lit up and said “yes, bacon please!” As expected, he didn’t finish his and brought half the burger home. It was a pretty big burger though.
As I sipped on my Pinot Noir (Red Hawk), I was going back and forth between a few different choices. I decided to go with something that I had never had before so I went with the Seared Ruby Red Trout. Our server was explaining that they change their menu seasonally but the Trout is the one item that they keep all year round. I was very happy with my entree. The fish was very light and went very well with the potatoes, bacon, and corn that it laid on top of. The Tabasco butter sauce didn’t have much Tabasco flavor, so if I had to point out a weakness in the dish, it would be that. Otherwise it was very delicious.
As always, I gave the kids the option to do dessert and once again, they decided to go for it! Which I was glad because I knew before we even went that I was getting dessert, so I didn’t have to feel guilty having dessert alone! Chloe went with the ice cream sundae and Alex went for the Root beer float, both from the kids menu. I scoped out the dessert menu at home so I knew already I was getting the Croissant Bread Pudding. I’ve had bread pudding at several restaurants in our Dining with Dad series, and most have been phenomenal. This is yet another one at the top of the list. The bread was soaked perfectly, making it just the right firmness. Combine that with the coconut, cherries, and almonds and it was the perfect end to a perfect meal. I can’t wait to go back and have it again! Who wants to go with me?
