The Hickory House
This week we decided to once again hit up a local Gahanna favorite of ours, The Hickory House. It’s nice having non-chain restaurant options, which generally seem to have better food and atmosphere. While there are two locations of Hickory House, clearly I wouldn’t consider it a chain restaurant.
We were lucky enough to get a booth seat near the back of the restaurant. We were all pretty tired from our early morning adventure tackling the Donut Trail. It was pretty funny when I asked the kids if they wanted to do the Donut Trail, their first question was to ask if we could still do Dining with Dad at night, since it was Friday. To which I obviously agreed that we would still go somewhere at night. This is why we kept it local this week, having been up since 2am!
Being a steak house, Alex went for steak. Still pretty full from our Donut adventure, he went with something off the kids menu. Sometimes the steak on kids menus can be a bit dicey. They label theirs as a Top Sirloin, which should be a pretty good cut of steak, but we’ve been to some places where I think they label it sirloin and end up giving you something much cheaper. However, this was true to the sirloin cut and Alex enjoyed it very much. As he always does, he asked for A1 and dipped each piece in that. One of these days I’ll convince him to just eat the steak with no sauce.
Chloe is at the age where she sometimes eats off the kids menu, and sometimes the adult. Today she went for the kids menu and decided on the baby back BBQ ribs. She loved them and ate every morsel. Her only complaint was that she wanted more! Next time, she’ll definitely be eating off the adult menu.
I’m a huge fan of meatloaf. It’s hard for me to pass up the option when it’s on the menu. There’s just something about meatloaf and mashed potatoes that hits the spot. It reminds me of home cooked hearty meals I used to have as a kid. The onion straws on top add a nice little crunch to it as well. Add in the side of cole slaw and this was a perfect American meal.
