Windward Passage
This week’s Dining with Dad was supposed to be at a Korean BBQ restaurant. Last weekend, Chloe went to one with her friend and did not really care for it. I think the table was ordered for by the friend’s mom so Chloe didn’t exactly pick her choices of food, so we may try it down the road. But it seemed too close to go to one this weekend. Therefore we went with the next location on my current list of restaurants and went to Windward Passage.
We opened the doors and Alex and Chloe were the first to walk through. A woman was coming out and said, “Wow, you’re BY FAR the youngest people in this place.” She mentioned she was just in there buying some gift cards. She was not kidding! I don’t think there was anyone in the restaurant that was under 70 years old. The small parlor area that they had was full of people waiting. We had to put our name on the list as they don’t take reservations. It took about 25 minutes before we were able to get a table.
While we were looking over the menu, I asked the kids if they would try oysters if I ordered them. Alex, who’s allergic to them said yeah and Chloe said no because she didn’t like the mussels that we got when we were down at the beach last year. There were only 4 of them anyway so I decided to go ahead and order the Oysters Rockefeller and see what the kids think. Alex ended up eating a whole one and liked it. Chloe tried a little bite and said she didn’t really like them. I LOVED them. They were fantastic.
We all finally figured out what we wanted. Each of our meals came with either a tossed salad, coleslaw, or waldorf salad. The kids both went with the coleslaw. I haven’t had waldorf salad in years and wanted the kids to try it so that’s what I ordered. Both were very good. Our server thought it was funny that I was making the kids try the oysters and the waldorf salad.
Before we left home, I told Chloe I knew what she would order. In fact, I wrote down what she would order, folded up the piece of paper and had her put it in her pocket. When it came time to decide, she had a big grin on her face and said she knew what she wanted. I asked her what she was getting and she said the Crab Cakes. She opened up it up and found “Crab Cakes” written on it. She really liked the crab cakes and the sauce that came with it which added a little spice.
Alex had a tougher time deciding on what he wanted. He started looking at some of the fried fish options to go with a fish and chips but it didn’t sound quite right for him. I told him there was options that were non seafood, like ribs, steak, and chicken, but he said that he had to get seafood since we were at such a good seafood restaurant. He finally decided on one of the daily specials, swordfish! He really liked the swordfish, which is actually what I was going to get. I decided to get something else since he was getting it and we decided to split half and half, which again the server thought was so fun. I think she was just glad to converse with people under the age of 70.
Since Alex took my option, I asked him what else he was thinking of getting. As like I did with Chloe, I wanted to get something that he might want in case he didn’t like the swordfish. He said his second option was going to be another daily special, the Halibut. That sounded great to me so that’s what I decided on. As I mentioned, we split them half and half so Alex could try them both. I asked him which he liked more and he said the Halibut, which was also obvious in that he had leftover swordfish on his plate that I got to finish off for him. Both fish were cooked perfectly and very delicious.
If you’ve stuck with us, now you get to hear the surprise of the evening. We had finally all decided on what we were going to order and were waiting for our server to come over to our table. She brought out a tray with salads for the 6 top that was next to us. Also on the tray was something that kind of looked like cinnamon rolls. The kids spotted it right away and asked if that’s what it was. I thought there’s no way but then I smelled something that smelled just like cinnamon rolls. The server handed everything out to the 6 top and then came to our table. I told her that the kids were curious about the cinnamon rolls on the table next to ours and how we could get them as we didn’t see them on the menu. She said they come with everyone’s meal! They were so good, the kids asked me if I could see if we could get some more to take home with us. Sure enough, you can buy more to-go, so we brought 4 more home with us. What a fun little surprise that was!
